Fully-Insured insurance plans place the fiduciary responsibility for claims payment on the insurance carrier. All fully-insured small group plans offered after 1/1/2014 must be Affordable Care Act (ACA) compliant. Popular carriers in NE Indiana are: Anthem BC/BS, United Healthcare, and Physicians Health Plan (PHP).

Employers can choose to request a quote from a carrier based upon the health risk of their employees. Self-insured plans require that the employer retain the fiduciary responsibility to pay claims. Balanced Funded plans build a premium based upon anticipated claims and administration of the plan. This allows the small employer to avoid roller-coaster billing of claims.

Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangements (ICHRA) are an alternative way for employers to offer benefits to employees, but in a more budget-friendly way. Employers establish a defined reimbursement they will provide for premiums and employees choose Individual Marketplace coverage that works best for them.
